The Italian Embassy in Stockholm has been informed about episodes of denied boarding on “Stena Line” ferries of Italian citizens bearing only a ID card in paper format.
This information has been reported to the relevant Swedish Authorities. They have confirmed that any valid identification document including a photo is sufficient, and that there are no further requirements on the format of the identity document in the Swedish legislation. Hence, the denied boarding of Italian citizens bearing ID card in paper format is contrary to the Swedish legislation.
While assuring that the Italian Embassy in Stockholm will continue to work with the Swedish Authorities to defend the legitimate rights of Italian citizens, we invite all Italian citizens intending to travel to/from Sweden on ferries to check beforehand the chosen ferry Company’s policy on documents accepted for boarding.
